The Jadeclaw Illustrations: The Nobles

My conception of the aristocracy was of people living in long established and traditional positions of power and wealth and influcence. For the most part, they are all subject to the foibles, corruption and minor sins that I think tend to befall anybody in their position.

Phoenix

Unlike most of the rest of the nobles, I don't really see the phoenix as playing into any of the petty circle of vanities and posturing as the other mundane animal nobles tend to. She is the noble's noble, if that makes any sense. Very much mystical and truly withdrawn and above it all. If anything, that remoteness is her only fault, for it can result in a passivity and apathy about the needs of the people or some similar call to arms and morality. Such dreaminess is a luxury for those who don't have to deal with the day-to-day problems of class struggle.

Pig

Caring little for the physical vanities, appearance or intrigues, the pig is unique among the nobles as being a member of the club in largely name only, certainly not in spirit. I see him as pretty down to earth, a moocher and occasionally selfish, but overall not bad company for the common folk. Most likely because to him, the "little people" really know how to live and have a good time. If push were to come to shove, I'm sure he'd assert his social position. But for the most part, he just uses it to forego paying up his tab at the local greasy spoon. This fellow's greatest crime, shame and very real sin is hunkering down and hording the dumpling and steamed bun cart at Dim Sum, something I would do in a heartbeat given the slightest edge in status and influence. He's had to pop open his jacket to give himself some breathing room, though he doesn't look ready to call it quits any time soon. And I don't blame him.

Rabbit

A young rabbit, portrayed ostensibly hunting, posing with his kill. Though it's all for show, perhaps in front of a backdrop. He is barely grown into his men's clothes and perhaps doesn't even know what to do with the weapon in his hands. He is a boy, playing with pretense and certain trappings of civility and masculinity, pretending to be a sportsman, even as the sportsman pretends to be a hunter. I imagine him to be something of a privileged brat and a bully.
